A sewer-line failure is one of the worst plumbing emergencies a homeowner can face. The good news: a failing line almost always tells you it’s failing — months before the actual backup. Here’s what to listen for.
1. Multiple drains slow at the same time
A single slow drain is a clog in that fixture’s branch line. But when the kitchen sink, the laundry standpipe, and a downstairs toilet all start running slow within a few weeks of each other, the problem is downstream of all of them — in your main line.
2. Gurgling toilets when you run the dishwasher or washing machine
Your toilet’s water level shouldn’t move when something else drains. If you hear gurgling, water is being pushed past a partial blockage somewhere in the main line and venting back up through the trap.
3. Sewage smell in the basement or yard
The line is breached or backing up. Don’t wait on this one.
4. Sinkholes, soggy spots, or unusually green grass over the sewer path
Sewage is fertilizing the lawn. The line is leaking somewhere underground.
5. Recurring backups every few months
A line that you have to snake every spring isn’t just having bad luck. It’s telling you something specific — usually roots in a clay tile lateral, a partial collapse, or a belly where solids accumulate.
What we do about it
For all five of those symptoms, the right next step is a sewer camera inspection. We push a camera through the line and watch the monitor. Usually we find one of three things:
- Roots in clay or older PVC. Solution: jet the line clear, then schedule annual treatments — or, for severe cases, spot repair / replacement.
- A belly in the line. Solution: spot dig and re-grade.
- A break or collapse. Solution: full or partial sewer line replacement.
In Frederick County, sewer line replacement requires a permit and inspection. We coordinate with the county on every replacement we do.
Why we don’t just snake and run
Plenty of plumbers will snake a line, collect a check, and leave. We’ve inherited too many “fixed” sewer lines that re-clog three months later. If we run a camera, you see the actual problem on the screen before we quote the actual fix. That’s how we’ve stayed busy in Frederick County since 1953.
